Dr. Lourens Bloem (PharmD, MSc) is assistant professor at the Centre for Clinical Therapeutics of the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology of Utrecht University (Utrecht, the Netherlands). He was trained as a pharmacist (2016) and is currently in training as a clinical pharmacologist.
Lourens’ research focuses on evidence generation for and patient access to innovative medicines, including advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) and anticancer medicines. Among others, he is involved in the DARE-NL (www.dare-nl.nl) and CURE4LIFE research consortia that aim to facilitate sustainable patient access to ATMPs to treat cancer and orphan diseases.
Lourens obtained his PhD in drug regulatory science in 2021. This research focused on evidence generation for regulatory decision-making on medicines, as well as their effects on downstream decision-making for reimbursement and clinical practice. At the same time, he was pharmacovigilance assessor at the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB), where he was involved in the assessment of safety data, including risk management plans and post-authorisation safety studies. Thereafter, between 2020 and 2022, he was programme manager Drug Regulatory Science for the Utrecht Science Park, facilitating capacity building in regulatory science and interaction between regulatory authorities and the Utrecht life sciences community.
