She is passionate about the use of electronic health records in epidemiology, partcularly in sleep research, women's health and cancer prevention. She has experience of analysing UK Biobank primary care data, as well as CPRD and Hospital Episode Statistics.
Melanie's PhD explores the effects of the Spring and Autumn daylight saving time clock changes on population health in England. It consists of three projects:
- Insomnia symptom prevalence in England: A comparison of self-reported data and primary care records in the UK Biobank: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2023-080479
- The effects of daylight saving time clock changes on accelerometer-measured sleep in the UK Biobank: https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.05.28.24308011
- Estimating the effects of daylight saving time clock changes on cardiovascular outcomes, depressive symptoms and road traffic injuries in England (using CPRD, HES Admitted Patient Care and HES A&E data).
Melanie will finish her PhD in October 2025 and will be looking for a role analysing electronic health records.
