(079) Use of new technologies and well-being in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) requires frequent insulin administration and glucose monitoring. Self-management is crucial for glycaemic control and prevention of progressive negative psychological symptoms.

Objectives: The main aim of this study was to explore the association between the use of new diabetes technologies and Well-being Index in adults with T1D. Additionally, this study aimed to evaluate the potential role HbA1c, smoking and physical activity.

Methods: Well-being was assessed by the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) questionnaire. Participant characteristics were also recorded.

Results: Overall, 181 adults (66.9% females) participated in the study. Mean T1D duration was 19±11.3 years. Multiple daily injection (MDI) therapy was used by 55.2% and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) by 44.8%. Use of MDI was associated with poorer well-being than CSII (48.6% vs. 51.4%), (OR: 1.922, 95% CI: 1.04-3.52). Almost half (50.3%) of participants exhibited inadequate glycaemic control (HbA1c≥7 %). Among participants with HbA1c < 7%, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and conventional capillary glucose meters were used by 87.5% and 12.5%, respectively. Physical activity was associated with higher frequency of well-being (OR: 0.313, 95% CI: 0.15-0.62).

Conclusions: Use of new technologies (CSII and CGM) was associated with higher well-being scores than use of MDI and traditional capillary glucose monitoring. CGM was associated with improved glycaemic control. Finally, physical exercise was associated with improved well-being.
