PhD fellow
Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology -
University of Oslo
Oslo, Norway
My name is Anastasia Giorcelli.
Since childhood, I have demonstrated a natural aptitude for mathematics, which developed into a passion during high school. I pursued a degree in Mathematics (LT-35), and my Bachelor’s thesis project sparked my interest in epidemiology. The opportunity to apply my quantitative skills in service to society led me to enroll in a Master’s Degree in Biostatistics (LM-82).
Last year during an 8-month internship with the PharmaSafe group, affiliated with the Pharmacy Department at the University of Oslo, I worked on my master’s thesis project. This period provided me with my first experience in a research environment, where I participated in conferences with both poster and oral presentations. The challenges inherent in research solidified my decision to dedicate my career to it.
After graduating, I began working as a research collaborator at the Unit of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Public Health at the University of Milano-Bicocca, and at the National Centre for Healthcare Research and Pharmacoepidemiology. My projects focused on perinatal and pediatric fields. This experience further strengthened my resolve to pursue a PhD.
As of August 1st, I have officially become a PhD fellow at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), a joint center integrating the activities of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Oslo and the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Oslo University Hospital. My future research will focus on melanoma, which accounts for 1-2% of all malignant cancers and is the leading cause of skin cancer deaths. I am eager to tackle and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
