Using generative AI to more efficiently conduct systematic reviews, solve coding problems, and communicate research findings: a student-led workshop

Background: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is gaining prominence as an assistive tool for researchers. However, leveraging AI requires transparency, documentation, responsible use, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.

Objectives: To introduce the application of GenAI tools to assist in the conduct and dissemination of epidemiologic research. The target audience includes those who are curious about the use of GenAI in our daily work as well as early-adopters of chat-based GenAI, with a focus on helping users avoid potential issues and improper use. It is also aimed to benefit researchers who would like to gain additional skills in thoughtfully and critically leveraging the assistance of GenAI in their research workflow

Description: This workshop will introduce participants to how AI-based tools can be leveraged to assist in literature review, programming, and communication of research. The course will emphasize transparent engagement with and critical evaluation of AI-generated outputs with knowledge of the biases and limitations inherent within these tools. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in interactive exercises using free GenAI tools for typical research tasks and data analysis. Those with restrictions on accessing GenAI tools will be able to follow along with live demonstrations led by the presenters.

The workshop will be moderated by Dr. Michele Jonsson Funk and cover the following topics:

- Brief introduction to GenAI tools

- Literature reviews: Improving efficiency while maintaining quality using GenAI. Clement Acheampong, BPharm, MPH

- GenAI: A SAS and R coding assistant. Catie Wiener, MS and Jeanny Wang, MPH

- From Data to Dialogue: Empowering Pharmacoepidemiology Research Communication through GenAI. Bria Carmichael, MPH

- Questions from the Audience

Key takeaways:
1) GenAI is a powerful tool that requires structured prompting and critical engagement considering its biases, limitations, and ethical
implications. 2) Always evaluate GenAI output, verify facts and sources generated, and adhere to relevant guidelines and regulations at your institution/publisher. Users are ultimately responsibility for and must be fully accountable for AI-generated content.
3) Respect privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property rights. Never input confidential or personal data into GenAI tools.
