Dr Gerd Maack works in the department of Pharmaceuticals at the German Environment Agency (UBA). One of his tasks is the environmental assessment of new pharmaceuticals. In addition, his work focuses on providing scientific advice to various ministries in Germany and the EU, leading working groups on behalf of the EU Environment Ministry (DG ENV) and participating in the national Diclofenac Round Table on the German government's trace substance strategy. He works in expert committees at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and in OECD test guideline development. For several years, Dr Maack has supervised projects and given lectures as part of various Master's degree courses on the environmental aspects of medicines.
Dr Maack studied biology in Konstanz and Bremen with a degree in tropical aquatic ecology. After completing his PhD thesis at the Environmental Research Centre in Leipzig (UFZ) on the influence of hormones on sexual development and population dynamics in fish, Dr Maack worked for 6 years at the University of Exeter, UK, starting with an EU Marie Curie Post Doc Individual Fellowship, before moving to the UBA in 2007.
