Hector S. Izurieta, MD, MPH, PhD, is Associate Director for Novel Clinical Investigations at the Office of Vaccine Research and Review (OVRR), CBER, at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Born in Uruguay, he has a foreign MD degre, an MPH from Harvard University, a CDC Preventive Medicine fellowship and a two-year training in Epidemiology at CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS). Since 2017, he has a a PhD in Epidemiology from Spain. He has extensive international experience in vaccine safety and effectiveness, and in the use of Real-world evidence.
He has worked at:
1. FDA, since 2003: in vaccine epidemiology and Real World Evidence (RWE), as epidemiology reviewer, Branch Chief, and, for the last 3 years, as Associate Director in OVRR
2. CDC, during 1993-2003: as an EIS Officer (1993-5), in the EIS and Preventive Medicine programs (1993-6), influenza Division (1996-9), Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), during 1999-2003, as CDC-seconded point person for measles elimination (goal achieved in 2003), and subsequently as acting Chief, PAHO Immunization Unit.
3. WHO Geneva (2014-15): under a Gates Foundation contract, developing guidelines for vaccination campaigns/supported Measles vaccination campaigns in Tchad
4. Previously: worked in South Sudan for 2 years in emergency medicine, for Médecins Sans Frontières France; and in Benin, in a health development program, for an agency of the Swiss Cooperation for 3 years.
He has published some 100 manuscripts on RWE study methods, vaccine effectiveness and safety, COVID-19, Influenza, Herpes Zoster, Measles, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, and other vaccine-preventable diseases
