(062) Assessment of Drug Therapy Satisfaction Using Treatment Satisfaction with Medicines Questionnaire (SATMED Q)

Background: Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) include personalized viewpoints tailored by the patient with reference to the care received, healthcare professionals conduct, and care outcomes. PROMs are beneficial as it assesses and maintains functionality and quality of life which are fundamental goals of geriatric care.

Objectives: To assess the drug therapy satisfaction among elderly patients with chronic diseases.

Methods: A prospective interventional study was conducted over a period of six months in the Departments of Geriatrics and General Medicine of a tertiary care hospital in Southern India, wherein all elderly patients (aged ≥60) with at least one chronic disease who were admitted for at least 48 hours, were enrolled. Patient satisfaction with chronic drug-based therapy was assessed using a patient-reported outcome measure tool- Treatment satisfaction with Medicines Questionnaire (SATMED-Q).

Results: A total of 282 patients were enrolled into the study. [160 (56.73%)] were male and [122(43.26%)] were female and majority belonged to the young-old (60-74 years) age group [185, (65.60%)]. Mean summated SATMED-Q score for the study population was found to be 47.41 ± 10.34. In a possible range from 0 to 100%, treatment satisfaction in our study population ranged between 47.07%to 100%. An average of 47.52 ± 9.92 patients experienced no side effects. 51.61 ± 7.39 patients found their medicines easy to use. Patients with an increased educational status [50.23 ± 10.10] and those falling into the upper lower (II) class [49.47 ± 10.93] were more satisfied with their therapy. The presence of multiple geriatric syndromes of frailty [46.77 ± 11.09] and sarcopenia [46.79 ± 11.28] lead to decreased satisfaction scores.

Conclusions: The application of PROMs among the elderly helped quantify their health related, subjective views and opinions. It aided in assessing the pattern of medication adherence, compliance, and persistence as a subset of treatment satisfaction.
